Across the country, people are mobilizing to stand up for our democracy and against the Trump Administration’s abuse of power. On October 18 – the ACLU of Illinois will join Indivisible Chicago and partner organizations for a mass demonstration to defend our freedoms.

Small independent media organizations have been leading efforts to cover the rapidly expanding militarization and abuses of power impacting our city and nation. Your financial support makes their work possible!

• UnRaveled Press: Unraveled was born out of the collaboration between two independent journalists in Chicago: Steve Held and Raven Geary. 

• The Triibe: We wanted Chicago’s journalism ecosystem to tell more thoughtful stories about Black people, stories that captured the multifaceted essence of our lived experiences, and solutions-driven stories that could teach and empower. 

• Invisible Institute:  A nonprofit journalism production company on the South Side of Chicago. We work to enhance the capacity of citizens to hold public institutions accountable. 

• Injustice Watch: A Chicago-based nonprofit journalism organization that examines issues of equity and justice in the court system.

• Block Club Chicago: An independent, 501(c)(3) newsroom that relies on readers for support.

• ProPublica: An independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism with moral force. We dig deep into important issues, shining a light on abuses of power and betrayals of public trust — and we stick with those issues as long as it takes to hold power to account.

Support Legal Aid Groups

A network of legal groups are holding the line against attacks from our federal government to protect our rights.

• National Lawyers Guild Chicago: Our aim is to bring together all those who recognize the importance of safeguarding and extending the rights of workers, women, farmers and minority groups, upon whom the welfare of the entire nation depends; who seek actively to eliminate racism; who work to maintain and protect our civil rights and liberties in the face of persistent attacks upon them; and who see the law as an instrument for the protection of the people, rather than for their repression.

• Organized Communities Against Deportations: OCAD stands for Organized Communities Against Deportations. We’re a group of undocumented, unapologetic, and unafraid organizers building a resistance movement against deportations and the criminalization of immigrants and people of color in Chicago and surrounding areas.

• IL Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights: ICIRR is dedicated to promoting the rights of immigrants and refugees to full and equal participation in the civic, cultural, social, and political life of our diverse society.

• The Midwest Immigration Bond Fund: The Midwest Immigration Bond Fund facilitates a revolving immigration bond fund to pay immigration bonds that frees individuals from ICE custody and gathers community to advocate for the abolition of immigration detention and surveillance.

• Palestine Legal: Our mission is to bolster the Palestine solidarity movement by challenging efforts to threaten, harass and legally bully activists into silence and inaction.

• ACLU of IL: The ACLU of Illinois (ACLU), and its affiliated Roger Baldwin Foundation (RBF), are non-partisan, non-profit organizations dedicated to protecting the liberties guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, the state Constitution, and state/federal human rights laws. The ACLU accomplishes its goals through litigating, lobbying and educating the public on a broad array of civil liberties issues.
